Environmental Noise Measurements: The Standards That Matter

Environmental noise assessments are governed by a well-defined set of international and European standards, adopted in Greece through ELOT.

The core standards

ISO 1996-1 and ISO 1996-2 set out the basic quantities, procedures and measurement methods for environmental noise. ISO 9613-2 covers the calculation of outdoor sound propagation.

Why accreditation matters

For a noise measurement to carry weight with regulators and courts, it has to be performed by a laboratory accredited under ISO/IEC 17025 for the relevant methods. Accreditation covers instrumentation, calibration, measurement uncertainty and the competence of the measurement staff.

What we deliver

  • Measurement campaigns. Short-term and long-term environmental noise measurements designed to the requirements of the relevant standards and the local regulatory framework.
  • Source-specific assessments. Industrial, road traffic, rail and recreational noise, with proper source identification and uncertainty analysis.
  • Reports that hold up. Accredited reports with traceable instrumentation, full documentation and clear reference to the methods applied.

Reliable noise data is the foundation of a defensible environmental impact assessment, a fair planning decision, and an effective noise action plan.
