A short scientific look at the pollutants emitted by fires at plastic manufacturing plants.
Incomplete combustion of plastics releases volatile organic compounds (alkenes, aldehydes), aromatics such as benzene, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Particulate concentrations near the plume can reach 5–10 times the regulatory limits, with mostly short-term health effects close to the source. Residents are advised to stay indoors, keep windows shut and switch HVAC systems to full air recirculation — concentrations drop sharply within hours of the fire being extinguished.
